I enjoy your use of metaphors that brings a deeper understanding of the current topic...I love to learn, which is exactly what I did here...except... it was as if I was walking down a path with a friend while they were talking and teaching me of things I hadn’t known...now I do!
Looking forward to the future journeys of learning!
Thanks, Conor, for a really interesting read — and I learned a ton. I didn’t know about Audubon the person.... aargh.... But was also glad to read about the school mascot being changed. And, I am a big fan of Jewel Weed and so I really enjoyed your video because I didn’t know that about the seeds. I appreciate the plant from a distance as I watch hummingbirds flock to them. It’s amazing that here in Maine the plants get so tall, 4 ft or more at times, but in Missouri I remember them being quite small and I wonder if that’s a function of the summer heat in Missouri because the plants themselves are quite delicate?
Hi Mary, thanks for reading and the interesting question! It's true, I've seen some big jewelweed plants in the Northeast as well. MOBOT lists their height range as 2-5 feet but I can't remember seeing a really tall one in Missouri personally (there was one in Omaha that was ~4 feet I think.) Hard to say if it's climate, genetic variation, or just the specific plants we've happened to see! http://www.missouribotanicalgarden.org/PlantFinder/PlantFinderDetails.aspx?kempercode=k490
